The question of who invented the term Cocktail is one that is asked by a great many people. The story goes that the cocktail was invented by an Irish inn-keeper in America. She created exciting mixtures of drinks which were served from decorated bottles with the tail feathers of roosters. Whereas there are tales that a French customer is said to have raised his glass to toast the wonderful drink he was enjoying and declared “Vive le cocktail” giving the mixed drink its name. Also the name could have been derived from ‘cock-ale’ which was a mixture of alcoholic drinks fed to fighting cocks to give them courage. But more realistic Cocktail has its origin during the time of prohibition in the United States in the 1920s, when alcohol was banned. The idea behind cocktail was an attempt to create something drinkable out of the infamous bathtub gin and various bootlegged liquors. Furtive drinkers invented fanciful coded system of imaginative and exciting names to disguise and fool the authorities into believing that the drinks they were sipping from their tea cups were, in fact free of forbidden hard liquor.

Whatever their origin, cocktails are a wide range of interesting mixtures, some of which (like the Martini, Kir Royale and the Manhattan) earned immortality as classic cocktails. The 1920s and 1930s were the golden age of the cocktail, and some of the more exotic ones that formulated then are still drunk in bars today such as the Bloody Mary, The Gimlet, The Tequila Sunrise, The Corpse Reviver, Buck’s Fizz and the Zombie. The first ever book on cocktail went by the ponderous title of The Bon Vivant’s Guide or How to Mix Drinks by Professor Jerry Thomas.

Join us at Rita’s Gourmet Goa while we take you through exotic Cocktail drinks and teach you all about the mixing equipment, glasses, how to measure the ingredients, how to serve the Cocktails and stock the ingredients required for a Cocktail bar.
